What Is a Yantra?

A yantra is a sacred geometric diagram that gives visible form to the energy of a mantra and the deity or planet it belongs to. Its triangles, circles, squares and lotus petals all radiate from a central point, the bindu, which represents the source of creation.

In Vedic astrology and Vaastu, yantras are used as remedies: a planetary yantra calms or strengthens its planet, while a deity yantra invokes that deity’s blessings for wealth, protection, success or harmony. Traditionally yantras are engraved on copper, silver, gold or crystal, or drawn on bhojpatra (birch bark).

Each shape stands for one of the five elements – a square for earth, a circle for water, a triangle for fire, a hexagon for air and the bindu for space. Read more in Elements in Yantra.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a yantra used for?

A yantra is used to invoke the energy of a planet or deity – to calm a troubled planet in the birth chart, attract wealth and success, protect the home or support spiritual practice.

Which yantra should I keep at home?

The Shree Yantra is the most popular choice for prosperity and harmony. For a specific need, choose a deity yantra (for example the Bajrang Yantra for courage and protection), or the yantra of a planet that is weak or troubled in your chart.

Where should a yantra be placed?

In a clean, sacred place facing east or north-east – usually the puja room or home altar, or an office desk for work-related yantras.

Does a yantra need to be energised?

Yes. A yantra should be purified and energised with its mantra before use, and worshipped regularly afterwards to keep its energy active.
